Maremma Guard Dogs for Alpaca Farms

Considering a livestock guard dog..…
the Maremma may be your answer!

Maremma guard dog

Where do they come from?

They were developed in Italy thousands of years ago to protect flocks of sheep and goats from attacks of wolves. Since the 70's when they were imported to the US, they have been recognized as one of the best breeds of livestock protection dogs.

What are they like?

They are a noble looking animal, with a broad head, a gentle expression, and a luxuriant coat of long white or cream-colored hair. They have strong legs and are heavy boned. They are gentle with people and extremely trustworthy with children. They tend to be somewhat wary of strangers, but are unlikely to attack, limiting their actions to barking.

How much training do they need to guard the herd?

The instinct to protect the herd is born into these dogs. They simply need to be bonded to the herd properly during the "bonding window" and the rest will take care of itself.

Is the Maremma suitable for a family pet?

It is not recommended that you purchase a Maremma for a family pet. It is a working dog with 2000 years of genetic background of livestock guardianship behind it and it needs a job to keep it occupied. Most dogs must be introduced to strangers that enter their territory.
